Digital Skills

Supporting your 'Business Wheel'

By Carla Caswell, Digital Skills Expert and Transformational Health Coach.

In a technological world that is constantly advancing and changing, businesses that embrace these skills and developments will reap the benefits of increased efficiency, revenue and wider reach. However, many small business owners are still grappling with the idea of finding time to implement digital tools into their business while managing the day-to-day running of things. In reality, these tools will actually increase efficiency and productivity within your business, which will open up more time in your day to focus on the things that allow you to remain in your zone of genius and to create that freedom you desired when getting into business in the first place! These are my top tips that you need to survive and build your business strength: Social media Social media allows you to increase your profile, customer base, loyalty and validate your brand by sharing your insights and offerings and communicating directly with your ideal client. If you feel overwhelmed by all the platforms out there, then I suggest starting with Facebook as it has well over 2.45 billion users and allows you to target your advertising to users by interests and regions. A simple website To get started you don’t need a fully-fledged e-commerce website -even a simple landing page will do. As long as you have your value proposition clearly outlined and your contact details you are good to go. Easy-to-use providers for creating a basic website are Wordpress, Wix, Squarespace and MailerLite. Building an email list While social media allows you access to millions of potential clients, at the end of the day they own the data to those users. So, if Facebook for example, was to disappear tomorrow your entire client database will disappear with it. This is why it’s imperative to always be thinking of ways to build your own email list. Your email list can be managed with providers such as MailChimp or MailerLite. Optimising your website for Google In order to maximise the impact of your website you need to consider implementing an SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) strategy. Google rewards sites that are user friendly, demonstrate user engagement and when visitors stay on your site longer. SEO can be at times tricky and it takes a while for results to show. Leveraging data analytics Data analytics includes a set of tools and applications to gather and analyse information from a variety of sources, such as your website traffic and your digital advertising campaigns. This way businesses can identify potential gaps in the market, increase productivity and enhance decision-making by understanding how their consumers behave and what their interests are. The key is to start small, implementing digital tools into your business that work best for you right now and look to outsource your requirements to digital skills experts so that you’re not spending hours of valuable time on areas that you don’t feel comfortable in.
